Field Trip – Third Degree Glass Factory

Next time you’re in St Louis you must stop by the Third Degree Glass Factory. This looks like a very good time for the glass lover. Classes, events, glass…good times. It’s a full service public art glass space established in 2002 by Jim McKelvey and Doug Auer. They offer studio rental space for glass artists as well as education, gallery space and a gift shop where local artists can sell their work.

Regular events bring in the public to educate them on the glass good time. Third Friday Open House parties is one of the events that sounds like a blast. There are demonstrations, music, drinks and you can even sign up for hands on glass experiences such as tile making, glass bead making or maybe make a paperweight. Next event is November 20, 2009. I know I wish I could swing by.

Field Trip – Bay Area Glass Institute

Today we’re heading to San Jose, CA to visit the Bay Area Glass Institute. The Bay area is blessed with a number of places people who love glass can go to learn more about glass. They offer classes in all aspects of glass working as well as studio rental time. There’s a gallery and a gift shop. They have events and lectures series offerings such as Third Thursdays. All of this sounds like loads of fun. I’m kind of jealous that we don’t have something similar in Los Angeles. Might have to do something about that…

So if you’re interested in venturing up California to the San Jose area or you already live up there take a tour of the Bay Area Glass Institute and pick me up a trinket from the gift store.

Public Glass – Hot Glass in San Francisco

Here I am wandering the web…looking at glass studios. Lusting over their facilities. Wanting their equipment. Today we’re in San Francisco at Public Glass. I’m thinking a trip to San Fransisco is in my future. Public Glass provides rental space, gallery space and classes. There are on going events and when you check their web site you can see various slide shows and videos of artist work and artists at work.

The rates to rent time on the equipment are truly reasonable. The costs of classes are beyond fair. Like I said, a trip to San Francisco is definitely in my near future. I’m thinking a glass blowing class would be awesome! And when I get back there will certainly be pictures!

Glasswork in Nairobi

More glass from around the world. This stop is Kenya, where our President here in the US has family. The glass shop is in Nairobi, opposite the Nairobi National Park. It’s the Kitengela Glass Studio and they make some absolutely wonderful work. There are beads and jewelry and blown glass and mosaic work and stained glass. It’s more like, what don’t they have? the concept for the studio is inspiring. They use recycled materials, give back to their community, offer scholarships, help fund the local orphanage among other things. They are an example of all that is right in how a studio can be run.

The founder of the glass facility is Nani Croze and her and her family have created a community of artists that make amazing art, are paid fair wages and give so much back to their community while being conscientious to their surroundings and environment. They’re Having a Heatwave…in the Pacific Northwest

I know I just recently wrote about Bullseye and their amazing goodies but as I was wandering through Facebook I came across pictures of the factory. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal, you know, them making glass and all, but they’re in the middle of a heatwave of grand proportions. Hotter than any of them are used to. Like Africa hot. Almost Phoenix hot…OK maybe not that hot but really hot. In the 90’s. So check out the picture of the thermometer in the hottest end of the hot shop.

Studio Tour: Fire and Friends Z, Arizona

I recently hosted an open studio event at the Fire and Friends Z art studio in Peoria, Arizona. It’s a wonderful space that is building its classes as well as being available for teachers to come in and teach their own workshops and hold their own events. Marcia, the owner, is dedicated to promoting creativity and has a passion for helping to step out of the box. You can’t help but feel inspired when you’re there.
