What Do You Do With Glass?

My passion is glass. I melt it and form it into cute beads…pretty beads…sometimes beads that blow my mind. I also fuse glass into objects…functional art. A sink…a lamp…plates and bowls. Then there’s mosaic. Bits of glass and tiles adhered to objects and walls and surfaces. It’s all about color and form and function regardless of the technique used. What do you do? How do you make your glass sing? This is a bit of audience participation…we’ve done it before. Inspiration was the last bonus bead blog. So this one will be about what you do with glass. The first five comments I receive will get a set of beads I’ve made. Little accents. Some fabulous Double Helix glass. Maybe Terranova, one of my new favorites. Maybe Kronos. Could be Triton. Maybe Aurae. Your comments will determine your beads. But there are no bad beads…

Silver glass is all the rage these days in glass beadmaking. From the picture above you might understand why. The glass is very expensive due to its high silver content that gives the glass its color. It also can be a little tricky to work. Lampworker Marcy Lamberson highlights the butterfly beads of Robert Simmons on her blog. Robert is the Director of Bead Donations for Beads of Courage, an organization that provides arts in medicine to children and families coping with serious illness.

In the Beads of Courage program butterfly beads are especially important since they are given to a mother or family when a child loses their battle with cancer.

If any of you read Watch Me Create, the team blog that I manage and write for, it is no surprise to you that I love hearing about artist’s creative processes. Studies in Glass Color

I’ve embarked on a color study project to document what different colors of transparent glass do when layered over each other. I’m hoping that it will serve as a reference as I branch out into other designs. It is very time consuming as each bead in this series takes 30 minutes to an hour but once the project is done I suspect it will save me time that has normally been spent experimenting with color for each design. No more trial and error…I can just reference my documentation. You can read more about this project today on Watch Me Create, another blog I write for.

Now there is a blog that puts a focus on working the elusive silver glasses that are so popular right now with glass bead makers and buyers Maybe reading the enVisin blog will help with that.

There are different methods to working silver glass that produce a range of colors not common in soft glass beads until recently. The glass is expensive but well worth it if you can get it to do what you want. Check out the blog and see for yourself. But warning…don’t go if you don’t want to have a new desire hanging over your head!

Silvered Ivory Tutorial – Part 1

Rose over at the Spawn of Flame blog brings us a tutorial on how to make Silvered Ivory Stringer. What is that? It’s ivory glass, rolled in fine silver foil and then pulled into long glass strings (stringer). These stringer are used as an artist would use a pencil or paintbrush…to melt on fine designs. The reaction of the silver and ivory form a webbing and curdling effect that is both organic and mesmerizing.
