And if you’re a glass blower they’re looking for more glass blowers to work in the show. On the Corning page about the cruise you can watch a video telling you all about the cruise. This is Corning’s way of educating the public about glass and giving employment opportunities to glass blowers. Check out the video…

According to their web site they can manufacture 22,000 different solr/density/texture combinations of sheet glass. But they’re more than just sheet glass. They have a hot glass department, they sell dalle de verre pieces, rondelles and all kinds of other glass goodies. They’re located in Kokomo, Indiana and offer regular tours of their facility.

For their monthly event 2300 degrees Homecookin’ Erik Meek of Corning Studio has created all kinds of glass food. A turkey and cranberry sauce, the jellied kind that looks like the can it was in, green beans and even the treats for Santa. Amazing…this post is going to be mostly pictures since I’m absolutely in awe of this work. So tasty and so talented!!! The event is December 17th so if you’re in the Corning area tomorrow go by and check it out. There’s music, food, drinks and glass of course. Fun for all!!

As I looked around for something interesting to write about and share with all of you, I came across the blog for Glass Quarterly. they were mentioning an Australian group of musicians that use glass bowls and glasses and rods as their instruments. They are called The Glass Percussion Project and you should check out what they do. There’s a video on the blog.

It’s not the first time glass has been used to make music. You all remember and sometimes still see people playing crystal wine glasses by rubbing the edges to make them sing. Water is placed in each glass to varying degrees to achieve different notes. That’s been a method for making music for centuries. Then there’s the glass harmonica also known as a crystallophone invented by Ben Franklin. Check wikipedia if you think I’m kidding. He got his idea from watching the wine glass being played. Check out the glass harmonica made by Thomas Bloch. Pretty cool.

Thomas Bloch Glass Harmonica

Back to the Australians…check out their web site to see the glass that was blown from them and learn more about what they do.

So you’re going to Louisville for the GAS Conference next June, 2010 and you want to know what’s up before the conference. The party before the party. There’s always pre-conference activities and I’m here to entice you to check out what’s planned.

If you like horses and horse racing there are a couple of events perfect for you. There’s the Backstretch Breakfast and Louisville Stoneware Tour or the Horses and Bourbon Tour. The first allows you to witness training of the horses at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, while enjoying breakfast in the Trackside Kitchen. After that you check out two floors of race related exhibits at the Kentucky Derby Museum and see Churchill Downs Frontside and the Winner’s Circle. Once you’e done with the horse stuff you go over to Louisville Stoneware, to see how this stone ware is created. But maybe you prefer Bourbon…then go on the Horses and Bourbon Tour. First you go to the Kentucky Horse Park to visit with more than 30 different breeds of horse. YOu see the blacksmith, International Museum of the Horse and enjoy lunch at Holly Hill Inn. Finally the bourbon, at one of Kentucky’s oldest distilleries, Woodford Reserve. But where’s the glass you say. Oh you’ll get to that…check the GAS web site for more information if you haven’t received your conference information brochure.

This looks like a very good time for the glass lover. Classes, events, glass…good times. It’s a full service public art glass space established in 2002 by Jim McKelvey and Doug Auer. They offer studio rental space for glass artists as well as education, gallery space and a gift shop where local artists can sell their work.

Regular events bring in the public to educate them on the glass good time. Third Friday Open House parties is one of the events that sounds like a blast. There are demonstrations, music, drinks and you can even sign up for hands on glass experiences such as tile making, glass bead making or maybe make a paperweight. Next event is November 20, 2009. I know I wish I could swing by.

I love gardening. I love growing things. I love to be outside working in the dirt. But, alas, for the last 11 years of my life I have lived in the middle of the desert. Not only does that mean that anything that you plant to survive probably has some type of sticky substance or needles on it but also that the soil is hard, dry and just not very workable. Did I mention that it’s so hot that flowers don’t survive?

Today I was waking up with my cup of coffee and Google reader and came up on this post by Atlantic Art Glass. They spoke of their garden/yard a little differently, as being overgrown but seeing their beautiful glass flowers I thought, well, I might just have to settle for glass beauty around me instead of the real blooming, flowering garden variety.

It could be worse. I could have a huge lawn to mow.
